Service Learning Travel Opportunities
Thanks to the movies and other similar media outlets, the idea of backpacking through Europe has become almost a post-high school cliché. However, many students do long for the opportunity to see the world before settling down again to hit the college books. There are many service learning travel opportunities that combine this desire to blaze a trail in a new part of the world with a volunteer component that can be used for educational credit.
There are many programs throughout the world which take volunteers for a variety of service positions for college credit, or sometimes for a small stipend. These programs can be short two-week excursions. Others may last for many months or, in some cases, a year or more. Your placement in these programs may be based on your skill set or declared college major. If you’re training to be a doctor, you could be sent to aid health care workers in a clinic on the other side of the world. Future teachers could teach English as a second language to children across the ocean. Some programs may help you find employment back home after completing the program abroad.
These global volunteer efforts not only afford you an opportunity to provide valuable services to those in need, but they allow you to see and experience things you might not have otherwise had. Service learning experiences may earn you college credit, but they can also help you develop new skills and an understanding of an entirely different culture from your own.
