Service Learning Studies

Often times, most college students are eager to graduate so they can finally apply their newly-acquired skills to the world around them. They may also be eager to travel or to try unique experiences while they gain that skill set. Many colleges and universities allow students to do this while still earning college credit through service learning studies.

Serving learning courses tie together a community or social-based program with a rigorous academic component, often in a classroom or online classroom setting. Students who participate in these programs are expected to not only excel in the hands-on portions of the program, but in the classroom portions, as well. Sometimes, there are academic standards set for entering students before even being accepted into a service-learning program. The idea is to allow students to use their educational skills in a realistic way for the betterment of their community or the world at large. Many students are drawn to these types of programs, which can take them abroad and into cultures with which they are unfamiliar.

The educational component of service-based learning is the main distinction between these programs and volunteerism. Many volunteer programs and clubs serve the local community, aid in disaster relief all over the country and world, and focus on making a positive impact on the global scene. If you do not have the time to complete the necessary requirements of a service-learning program, but still want to get involved, volunteering is an excellent way to influence the world around you.
