Service Learning for High School
Ghandi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” It is this basic principal on which many communities around the country are building programs of service learning for high school students. These intuitive programs integrate special aspects of community, education or social based learning into the traditional academic curriculum of the world. Usually, most of these students must complete a specified minimum number of service hours to qualify for this component of their high school career.
There are many benefits to service learning during the high school years. Service learning aids the community or organization the students are working for, but it also benefits the students. Many students learn best by doing hands-on activities. Being able to apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations allows students an opportunity to flex their problem-solving and decision-making skills. These programs often also focus on personal growth and development of each student by including a reflection component at the end of the experience.
Service learning also provides students a glimpse of life outside their typical high school world. Some students may work with the poor or those with learning disabilities. They may bring valuable skills to local non-profits or feed the hungry. These experiences can deepen a student’s appreciation for his or her own opportunities and enrich not only their educational path, but even their future career. It can also serve as an empowering experience that students can use to their own benefit on a college application.
