Online Service Learning Opportunities
Through their educational paths, many students, at both high school and college level, will participate in some sort of volunteer or service-oriented program. Not all schools, however, sponsor a program. Therefore, students may have to search for online service learning opportunities.
There are a variety of reasons students decide to participate in a service learning program. One of the most obvious reasons is because it looks good on a college application. In cases where a student must compete against other, similar students for the same spot in a college program, having a service learning component on his or her resume may give them the edge they need. Also, many students are drawn to the hands-on opportunity that service learning offers. It’s a chance for students to take what they’ve learned in the classroom and apply it in a real and meaningful way. Some students may participate in service learning for the sole benefit of doing good works. Others may find an opportunity to gain valuable experience in their future careers while benefiting their local community.
When looking online for service opportunities, be sure to check out the authenticity of the site before submitting any information. Your school counselor may be able to verify these Web sites or point you toward reputable service learning programs. You may also want to consider how many hours you realistically can spend on service learning projects, and what types of service you would like to do. This will help the program you choose place you in the right service learning opportunity.
